Mercedes Makes Its Mark on Madrid
What can we learn from the first day at a brand-new Formula 1 circuit?
Mercedes quickly gave an answer in Madrid. George Russell set the pace in FP1, while Kimi Antonelli took over at the top in FP2, giving the team a strong opening to the weekend.
Antonelli’s performance was particularly encouraging. The young Italian looked comfortable around the new circuit and found the speed when it mattered. His FP2 lap of 1:33.662 put him first, ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.
Russell, meanwhile, finished FP1 fastest but could not complete a representative flying lap in FP2. Still, Mercedes showed that its car has the potential to fight near the front.
The new Madrid track is already proving demanding. Its fast corners, close barriers and heavy braking zones leave very little room for mistakes. Tyres are another major concern. Both Mercedes drivers noticed how difficult it could be to keep them in the right operating window, while the long Turn 12 places considerable pressure on the rubber.
There is also a strategic question. Overtaking appears difficult, which makes qualifying especially important. Starting position could have a major influence on Sunday’s race.
Ferrari looks close, while Racing Bulls also impressed with rookie Arvid Lindblad reaching fourth in FP2 before his crash brought out the red flags.
Friday has only given us the first clues. Mercedes looks strong, but Madrid may still have plenty of surprises waiting.
