Russell Grabs Baku Pole
George Russell secured a dominant pole position -for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix with a breathtaking performance in Baku. Driving for Mercedes, Russell showed incredible speed throughout the qualifying sessions.
He saved his absolute best for the final segment, setting an unbeatable time of 1:42.526. This incredible lap put him more than eight-tenths of a second ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, marking one of the biggest gaps between first and second place in recent motorsport history.
Meanwhile, a major surprise shook up the session early on. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli made a rare error during the first part of qualifying, known as Q1. Antonelli misjudged his steering angle slightly and clipped the inside wall at Turn 1. The impact broke a vital steering component called a track rod, forcing him to stop his car immediately. Because he could not complete a fast lap, the championship frontrunner will start the race from a disappointing sixteenth place on the grid.
This mistake opens a massive door for Russell to close his 81-point championship deficit to Antonelli. However, the street track in Baku is notoriously difficult. Unlike high-speed circuits where overtaking is common, Baku features tight, slow corners that tend to spread the cars out. Oscar Piastri will start third for McLaren, while Isack Hadjar takes fourth. Defending champion Max Verstappen was slowed down by yellow flags caused by Lando Norris and will start eighth. Russell knows he cannot relax, as Antonelli has won from deep on the grid before.
Can the young championship leader fight his way through the tight city streets, or will Russell cruise to a flawless victory under the Baku sun?
